Mission Celebrates 40 Years of Athletics

Welcome to the 40th year of Mission College Athletics (missionsaints.com)

In our history, we have won two state titles and 15 conference championships. We look to continue that success for another 40 years.

Current Baseball Coach Bobby Hill, a former Major Leaguer, has reached the Regionals three times in five seasons, winning the 2016 and 2018 conference titles. He has sent 25 players to four-year schools.

Basketball Coach Corey Cafferata has led the Saints to seven playoff appearances in the last nine seasons. Thirty players have moved onto four-year schools under Cafferata.

Last year both our tennis programs had players compete at the state championships. Over the past two years, we have restarted volleyball and softball.

As you can see, Saints Athletics is on the move. We invite you to visit our website at missionsaints.com and come out to a game or two.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Athletics began with a partnership with the City of Santa Clara, which continues to this day. That partnership helped build our tennis and athletics fields.

We have since opened up a 17,000 square-foot gymnasium (1994); added locker rooms (2002) and built the Viso Sports and Kinesiology Complex (2016). This Fall we moved into our own athletics building.

WINNING TRADITION
But we don't want to forget our past. Saints Baseball featured Hall of Fame Coaches Sam Piraro and Mike Perez. And to Piraro's credit, he not only started the program but also designed the uniforms and the field he played on. He then went onto win two state titles and five conference titles in seven years.

Gary Cunningham, another founder of our athletics programs, won conference titles in 1982 and 1983 in softball. But we can't forget about our Men's Soccer team, who won conference titles in 1982 and 1984; or Todd Eagen's baseball club (1999); or Tito Addison's basketball team (2004-05), conference champions as well.

Or forget the countless student-athletes that put on a Saints jersey and competed for Mission College. Their goals to earn a degree are equally impressive.

NEW CAMPUS
Our campus has changed as well. The Main Building has been replaced by the Gillmor Center and Student Engagement Center and a new central plaza, STEM Center and Business Tech Building are in the works thanks to the generous support of our community.

We invite you to stop by the campus, our athletics director Karen Yoder ([email protected]) would be glad to give you a personal tour.
