SANTA CLARA, Calif.-- Out of an abundance of caution and based on discussions with the District, State Chancellor's Office and Santa Clara Health Department, Mission College has decided to suspend in-person classes taught on the Mission campus starting on March 11 and continuing into April.
Classes will resume in waves on March 16, March 23, and April 6 as online courses or with alterations. Lists of classes will be published on the college website and through direct communications from instructors. Spring Break will still occur from March 30 to April 5.
Online classes will continue as normal. The campus will remain open.
When classes resume, they will be offered online to the extent they are possible.
Classes taught offsite through apprenticeship programs or as area high school CCAP courses taught at the high schools will continue as scheduled or until further notice. Separate guidance specific to Health Occupations clinical sites will come under separate email.
Further communication will be available at missioncollege.edu as well as via email to Mission College students before the resumption of classes.
The Child Development Center will remain open. Athletic events will continue, but fans are not allowed. Most other March events have been curtailed.
The College realizes some students have technological challenges, such as lack of wifi or a laptop, we will continue to have our Tutoring Center and Library open during this time and will work with students to remain successful.
During the suspension of classes, staff and faculty will work to place suspended classes into Canvas, its online classroom tool, as well as look at alternative approaches to providing course material. These will be both short term and long term guidelines for the Spring semester.
The committee on Distance Education, which works with online classes, has been working to develop a plan for students and faculty moving forward.
One tool in Canvas includes using Zoom, which can record and transcribe online lectures.
The College has also learned best practices from its colleagues who were affected by the California Wildfires and how to deal with a disrupted campus.
Classes are not canceled, and students who complete the semester will still receive credit and their grades, but the format for the rest of the semester will change.
Commencement for the Spring Semester is May 22.
