Asian American Collection dragonAsian American & Pacific Islander Collection

With a generous grant from the Robert N. Chang Charitable Foundation, the Mission College Library created the Asian American Collection and Speaker Program in 2004. The name was eventually changed to include Pacific Islanders.

The Asian American & Pacific Islander Collection is a special collection of the Mission College Library. The collection showcases writings by and about all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, with an emphasis on Chinese Americans. It documents the impact they have made on American society.

The collection includes books as well as audiovisual materials. It describes and documents the unique history, culture, and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who strive to be successful in American society while maintaining their ethnic identities and cultural heritage.

It includes a wide selection of materials from the immigrant experience, and illustrates how the immigrants have made an impact on society. It reflects the challenges of youth who are growing up in two cultural worlds: the world of their parents and grandparents, and the world of contemporary America.

A concerted effort has been made to build a thoughtful and balanced collection that not only supports the curriculum, but also promotes cultural awareness.
